Nigeria cemented its dominance in African women’s football with a thrilling 3–2 comeback victory over host nation Morocco in the final of the Women’s Africa Cup of Nations (WAFCON) on Saturday.
Among the standout performers for Nigeria was Houston Dash player Michelle Alozie, a key defensive presence who started in the final and played the full ninety.
After falling behind 2–0 in the first half at a packed Stade Olympique in Rabat, the Super Falcons mounted a sensational second-half response, showcasing their resilience, tactical strength, and championship mentality.
Alozie was a vital figure throughout the tournament, but her most iconic moment came in the semifinal clash against South Africa, where she scored the dramatic winning goal late in extra time. That match had remained deadlocked at 1–1, with both teams converting penalties in regulation, before Alozie’s clinical finish sent Nigeria into the final.

Her performance across the tournament has solidified her role not only as a reliable player but also taking action in critical moments for the Super Falcons. Alozie has highlighted the talent across the African continent that has often been overlooked, and she hopes that WAFCON will help change that.
“I think it is so important to see that African players are excelling in the NWSL, and then coming and excelling at WAFCON, just like Banda and Racheal Kundananji have shown,” she told the media.
With this win, Nigeria secured their 10th WAFCON title, extending their record as the most successful team in the tournament’s history.
As the Super Falcons prepare for upcoming Olympic qualifiers and look ahead to the next FIFA Women’s World Cup cycle, this WAFCON victory sends a clear message: Nigeria remains the team to beat in African women’s football — and women’s football in Africa is here to stay.
Alozie is expected to return to action in the team’s first home game at Shell Energy after the NWSL summer break, when Houston takes on the North Carolina Courage on August 8th.
