LUBBOCK, Texas – The Texas Tech Red Raiders opened the NCAA Division I women’s soccer tournament with a 2-1 victory over the LSU Tigers at the John Walker Soccer Complex.

The First Round match in front of 1,788 fans was close throughout, and it was the home team that opened the scoring in the 23rd minute when Taylor Zdrojewski finished a beautifully taken free kick from Macy Blackburn and first timed the ball past Tiger goalkeeper Audur Scheving.

A dynamic duo for the books!

Macy Blackburn continued her right-side air attack in the first half with a cross headed into the back of the net by teammate Skylar Haase to put up the Red Raiders 2-0 at halftime.

But the LSU Tigers were not done and got off to a quick start in the second half with high pressure by Mollie Baker, which caused a defensive mistake, and Baker was able to feed the ball to Amy Smith, who first timed the ball into the back of the net only 27 seconds into the second half.

But no more goals came for the Tigers in that second half and the Texas Tech Red Raiders move on in the NCAA Tournament with a 2-1 win. They will next take on the #1 Ranked Duke Blue Devils who easily beat Howard University 8-0 in the first round.
