The NWSL x Liga MX Femenil Summer Cup 2024 has kicked off in its inaugural edition, but what is it all about?
The international tournament is being played between all 14 National Women’s Soccer League (NWSL) teams and six teams from Liga MX Femenil, Mexico’s top division of women’s football, whose participation was determined by their combined points totals from the 2023 Clausura and Apertura seasons.
This is the first international club tournament between women’s teams in North America — it’s a big deal.
It’s a competition where spectators can watch North America’s top women’s soccer leagues compete.
The Format
The 20 teams were divided into five groups of four teams each. The group stage will consist of three matches, and then only the top four teams with the highest points will advance to the semifinals.
Most matches will be played during the Olympic break for the NWSL. The final will be played on October 25th at San Antonio’s Toyota Field.
The Dash
The Houston Dash is participating in the tournament and is in Group C with Mexican teams Tigres UANL and Pachuca and fellow NWSL team Kansas City Current.
Dash will open against KC Current on July 20th, then face off against Liga-MX powerhouse Tigres UANL on July 28th. Their last group game will be against Pachuca, another mega Mexican team.
The Dash has had a couple of off-seasons due to many changes made by the coaching staff, players, and more. They sit in 12th place in the NWSL standings. The changes have taken a toll on the entire culture, but there are glimpses of what the Dash can become while still having important long-time players.
